There is a strong speculation that the reins of the city police will be handed over to Bedi soon as the current Delhi Police chief, K.K Paul, who retires next year, is most likely to be moved as the chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The tenure of current UPSC chairman Gurbachan Jagat ends on June 30, 2007.

According to senior officials of the ministry, a file relating to Paul's promotion has been moved in the ministry, as he has been the chief of Delhi Police for more than three years and four months, the longest tenure ever.

Medicos of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, who had been protesting the alleged manhandling of a senior doctor, called off their strike on the third day Friday after Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri assured them that their demand for security would be looked into.

"We called off the protest after the health minister gave us a written assurance to provide better security as well as civic amenities," said Manish Nathani, vice president of the LNJP resident doctors association.

Since Wednesday, nearly 1,500 medicos, including 700 resident doctors, had been on strike against the alleged manhandling of a senior resident doctor by relatives of a patient.

They were joined on Thursday by around 800 nurses, paralysing the state-run hospital's crowded emergency and outdoor patients departments.

A series of crimes in posh areas of Greater Noida adjoining the Expressway this month has raised security concerns but the police say they have not been able to solve any of the recent cases.

On Thursday, four motorcyclists stabbed a first-year BBA student, Sachin Arya (18), in the Knowledge Park.

The accused fled with the victim’s wallet and mobile phone — this despite the UP police being on a high alert ahead of elections in the state.

Students at the Knowledge Park told Newsline that instances of eve-teasing and snatching have gone up in the area, where around 340 educational institutions, including management and engineering colleges, are based.

In this tug-of-war between the government and the actor's family, the memorial is yet to be constructed even as the first death anniversary of Rajkumar is on April 12.

CM H D Kumaraswamy had promised Rs 10 crore for the memorial and in 2007-08 budget, Rs 3 crore has been allocated. Thespian's wife Parvathamma told TOI she is unhappy over the way government has handled the matter.

The Indian cricket team for the tour of Bangladesh will be selected here on 20 April.
The team will have a coaching camp in Kolkata from 2-6 May.

The team members will assemble in Kolkata on 1 May, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Mr Niranjan Shah. The team will depart for Bangladesh from Kolkata on 7 May.

The Indians are scheduled to play two Tests and three one-dayers during their tour of Bangladesh from 10-29 May.

Mr Shah said that all the players chosen on 20 April would assemble for a combined camp.
“I think the selectors will select around 20-25 players, but it’s up to them,” he said.

He said that the working committee had told the selectors to choose a young team, but it was entirely upto the selectors on how they go about their job.

“We decided that a young team be chosen for the Bangladesh tour, but I cannot say who will be in the team or who will not be. It’s upto the selectors,” he said, when asked whether Sachin Tendulkar would be dropped.

Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh have been given show cause notice for talking to the media by the board.

Febles Ortiz Eduardo Antonio, 47, who was arrested from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International - airport March 21, was again denied bail after he was produced in the sub-divisional court at Barrackpore.

The Indian cities of Bangalore and Chennai will host the second Afro-Asian Cup one-day series in June, organizers said on Wednesday.

The three matches between combined teams from the Asian and African continents will be played in Bangalore on June 6 and Chennai on June 9 and 10, Sharad Pawar, chairman of Afro-Asian Cricket Cooperation, told reporters.

He said the International Cricket Council had granted one-day international status to the three games.

The series will be preceded by two Twenty-20 matches, one between the women's teams of the two continents, in Bangalore on June 5.

The Asia team for the tournament and the men's Twenty20 game will be selected on May 11.

A solid waste management scheme for Chennai at a cost of Rs 255 crore would be taken up this year, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin told the State Assembly today.

Replying to the two-day debate on demands for grants for Rural Development and Local Administration Ministries, Stalin said garbage collection centres at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur would be modernised and maintained scientifically.

He said work for setting up an eco-park at a cost of Rs 100 crore in the city near the beach would begin this year.

Works for the 100 mld desalination plant near Mahabalipuram to provide drinking water to Chennai would begin this year, he said, adding the 200 mld water purification plant at Chembarambakkam near the city would start its operation from June.

Town Panchayats Anna renaissance scheme would be inaugurated in all the 561 town panchayats for strengthening infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs 35 lakh for each town panchayat and completed in four years.

A sum of Rs 135 crore had been allocated for repairing and renovating schools in villages apart from providing additional facilities.

Penal interest on electricity dues for rural local bodies would be reduced from 12 per cent to six per cent. Electricity charge for rural local bodies would be reduced to Rs 3 per unit from Rs 3.40 and for urban local bodies it would be decreased to Rs 3.30 from Rs 3.50, he said.

Anna renaissance scheme for infrastructure facilities in villages would be taken up in 2,534 villages at a cost of Rs 507 crore, he said adding rural roads would be repaired and relaid at an estimated amount of Rs 103.60 crore.chennaionline.com

Two real estate companies today announced that they were coming up with residential complexes for the higher income groups (HIGs), particularly for IT professionals, in this metropolis.

The Dubai-based ETA Star property developers, who have constructed many residential complexes in Bangalore and other parts of the country, said they were coming out with their maiden project at Chennai on a 4.4-acre site at Porur at a cost of Rs 85 crore.

The company's managing director, Syed Ismail, told reporters that the company had planned to invest Rs 1,100 crore on various projects in Chennai, which included two IT parks, one office-cum-shopping complex besides some residential complexes.

Another property developer, Hiranandani group, announced that it would come out with 'huge residential complex' at Old Mahabalipuram Road, where a number of IT companies were located.

The company's managing director, Surendra Hiranandani, told reporters that it would be constructing 2,300 flats on a 200-acre site. The property would be developed in three phases and would have a CBSE school, sports complex and a gym.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi handed over recovered stolen properties, including jewellery, vehicles and electronic gadgets, valued at over Rs 1 crore to owners in his official chambers at the Secretariat here on Tuesday. The properties were stolen by a bureau puller and his accomplices over the last seven years.

Later in a brief function, State Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin handed over properties to 196 complainants in the presence of Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee, Police Commissioner Letika Saran, Additional Commissioner S. R. Jangid, Joint Commissioners Sunil Kumar, G. Dorairaj, M. Ravi and Sandeep Rai Rathore. In 2001-07, police registered cases of bureau pulling in various police stations in the city.

Special teams were formed to nab the accused and sustained surveillance over the movement of suspected persons led to the arrest of bureau puller, whose name was given as Nagamani.

Based on his confession, police recovered 1,233 sovereigns of gold, 2,170 grams of silver, Rs. 6.57 lakh in cash, five cars, four autorickshaws, three laptops and 25 mobile phones from various places.

During night rounds last month, the St. Thomas Mount police nabbed Nagamani , which led to the detection of burglary in 105 places in the south and central zones committed by him and his accomplices, police said.

An announcement by the district magistrates of Noida and Ghaziabad about school buses being required on Wednesday afternoon onwards for the assembly election on Friday in the districts has meant that many schools might remain closed on Thursday.

While some Noida and Ghaziabad schools have already informed their students that they will remain closed on Thursday, several others have not yet been able to take any decision on the issue.

Deepak Chauhan and M K S Sundaram, district magistrates of Noida and Ghaziabad respectively, said school buses would be required for the assembly election on polling for the seven seats in Ghaziabad district on Friday which is also the polling day for the two assembly seats in Gautam Budh Nagar.

The arrest of two senior operatives of the banned Manipuri extremist outfit, the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak [PREPAK], from a hotel here on Sunday and two more of their colleagues from Imphal the previous day, have led to apprehensions that Kolkata could be becoming a haven for the extremists. The two held in Imphal had just arrived from Kolkata.

A self-styled captain and a lieutenant of the outfit were planning to get away from the city when they were arrested by officials of the military intelligence and West Bengal's Crime Investigation Department from a hotel in central Kolkata.

Their hideouts in the south of the city were later raided and incriminating material seized, a Defence spokesperson, told The Hindu here on Monday. Investigations were on to ascertain the presence of more PREPAK militants in the city.

With not too encouraging a response to its auction of hotel plots in the Capital last month, the Delhi Development Authority is now planning to reduce the reserve price of unsold plots to woo buyers. Also, in the next auction scheduled for the end of this month, the Authority is focusing on putting up “smaller plots” for sale.

The details are still being worked out, but senior DDA officials said: “We had set the reserve price depending on our past sales which had been quite high. But that policy just did not click.”

In March 2006, the DDA had managed to earn as much as Rs 1.25 lakh per sq metre and plots sold for three times the reserve price. However, this time round, of the seven hotel plots put under the hammer on March 22, only two were sold. These plots were approximately 3,000 sq metre in size. Among those that were not sold were plots at Dwarka — at reserve prices of Rs 77,000 per sq metre. But DDA officials said that now they will bring the reserve price down by about 10 per cent. Alongwith this, about 11 smaller plots, approximately 1,000 to 1,500 sq metre in size, will be put up for auction. These plots are located in Harinagar, Vivek Vihar, Anand Vihar, Patparganj .

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was on Sunday flown to New Delhi by a special plane for further treatment.

A team of doctors are also accompanying Mukherjee on the plane. Mukherjee was airlifted by an army helicopter to Kolkata from Krishanagar nearly 100 km from Kolkata.

West Bengal Governor GK Gandhi visited Mukherjee at the airport and inquired about his condition.

Two Air India planes were forced to make emergency landings at New Delhi's bustling international airport, throwing scheduled flights out of gear, airport officials said Monday.

No one was hurt during the two landings at the Indira Gandhi International airport, officials said.

"The runway was blocked earlier Monday when the nosewheel of an Air India Airbus A310 collapsed on touchdown after flying in from Shanghai via Bangkok carrying 169 passengers," spokesman Arun Arora said.
